A great beach for children is Le Galion, on the Northern end of the island. The water is shallow enough for toddlers, and you can actually wade several feet into the sea without the water going beyond your knees! This is also a popular spot for the older kids, who enjoy windsurfing.
Friar’s Bay is located on the Northern coast of the island close to Marigot. The bay is well protected from swells, and because of its calm waters, it’s one of the top beaches for the little ones. There are three restaurants on the beach, so it is possible to spend an entire day here with the family. It has a fair amount of sand; beautiful seashells to collect, and a good view of the neighboring English island Anguilla. Facing the west coast, Friar’s Bay has also lovely sunset views.
The stretch of sand lining Great Bay boasts calm waters that are perfect for families. The waters are clear and calm. Great Bay is good for swimming, but also a favorite place for beach strollers, as you can watch the coming and going of cruise ships in the harbor.
You have just to cross Front Street in Philipsburg, and after a few steps, you will find yourself right on the beach - bars, restaurants and entertainment all nearby. It is also really close to the Hodge’s Playground.
Maho Beach, a part of the Maho Resort and Royal Island Club, is a small stretch of white beach, that is not really appropriate for children for swimming, but it is the location what attracts all of its visitors. The beach is located at the southern end of the runway of Princess Juliana International Airport, thus providing you with a very special experience: For those who love a thrill, watch and see incoming Jumbo jets gliding in and landing on the strip.
Don’t forget to bring your camera, because nowhere else a Jumbo Jet will be passing as close over your head as on Maho Beach. Sit right in the middle of the beach, and you will get the full chilly blow! And when jets are taking off, the blast is so strong that it’s blowing sand and belongings all over the place!
Charming Pinel Island, is a tiny island on the north end of St. Martin, 5 minutes off the shores of French Cul de Sac, and a few hundred yards off the northern end of Orient Bay. A must see on your visit! It is the place where people on St. Maarten go to relax! The end of the road at French Cul de Sac opens onto a wide sandy area where there is a small wooden dock. Vendors and small ferryboats are waiting there to run you over to the island for a fee of seven dollars. Enjoy a wonderful short five-minute taxi-boat ride for a relaxing day of exploring, sunbathing, or a picnic on this tropical paradise!
The water is calm and crystal clear, accompanied by beautiful beaches. Ideal for snorkeling for its coral reefs, for children and also for sunbathing, as the west facing main beach stays sun-drenched until the end of the day! There are no cars and no electricity, however you will find three small beach bars/restaurants, two are run by a Frenchman, the other is a local shack with BBQ food, and grilled fresh lobster as well.
